  • Kalo is undisputably the most important plant in Hawaiian culture. Besides Kalo being a staple food source, it also had and still has many other uses. It is also the center of spiritualism, mythology, and social structure for the Kanaka Maoli. In Hawaiian culture, the kalo plant is literally the elder brother of mankind. Kalo stems were used on the skin to treat insect stings and stop a cut from bleeding, while stems mashed with sea salt were used to treat infections. Kalo stems were traditionally used to dye kapa (bark cloth) and diluted poi was used to glue pieces of kapa together for clothing.

    The legend of Hāloa:

Mo'olelo shares that Wākea (father, widespread-sky) and Hoʻohōkūkalani (daughter of Papa, the mother earth) gave birth to a stillborn child. They named him Hāloanakalaukapalili. Hāloanakalaukapalili was buried and his grave watered by his mother’s tears. Soon after, a stalk with a heart-shaped leaf arose from the spot ~ the first kalo plant. Over time Wākea and Hoʻohōkūkalani bore a second child, a male and named him Hāloa, the first man of the human race. As such, kalo is deeply ingrained in Hawaiian mythology and carries a spiritual connection to the land and to its people.
