We believe that food should not only taste good, but also do good. That's why we are committed to using sustainable ingredients and supporting local Hawaiian farmers. We are proud to be a part of Hawaii's rich agricultural heritage and strive to make a positive impact on our community.
Where It Begins
Hawaiian Krunch was born in my grandmother’s kitchen, long before I realized it. I grew up by her side, feet muddy from the lo‘i, hands sticky with cooked kalo as we pounded fresh pa‘i‘ai on wooden boards. We’d gather kukui nuts, cracking them open and roasting them until their buttery scent filled our small kitchen. I remember laying out slices of sliced of raw fish from our days catch to dry in the sun, feeling the warmth on our backs and the rhythm of tradition in our hands. My grandmother spoke in ʻōlelo Hawai‘i, not just with words, but with presence, teaching me that food is memory, mana, and connection.
Those moments weren’t just childhood memories. They were my first lessons in respect, patience, and aloha ‘āina.
“I ulu no ka lālā i ke kumu.”
The branches grow because of the trunk.
(Without our ancestors and roots, we would not thrive.)
Our Foundation
With that inspiration, my partner Tootsie and I founded Hawaiian Krunch Company, built around four of Hawai‘i’s most important canoe crops: Kalo (Taro), ‘Ulu (Breadfruit), ‘Uala (Sweet Potato), and Niu (Coconut). Each of our blends is handcrafted using over 80% locally sourced ingredients, working directly with farmers across the islands who share our vision of sustainability and connection.
The Kalo Journey
That truth echoed when I joined four other chefs from across the nation for a Kalo Journey—an immersive experience across O‘ahu and Kaua‘i. We worked side-by-side with local kalo farmers, learned the rhythms of their lo‘i, and reimagined what kalo could become on the modern table. The mission was bold: to create inspired dishes that would introduce kalo to a broader audience and help open export opportunities for Hawai‘i’s kalo growers, ensuring this sacred crop remains viable and vibrant for generations to come.
It was during that journey, surrounded by resilience, innovation, and deep aloha for the land, that Hawaiian Krunch truly took root.
What We Believe
Hawaiian Krunch is more than a snack. It’s a continuation of the legacy my grandmother passed down, the lessons learned in the lo‘i, and the relationships forged through every phase of the Kalo Journey. It’s granola made with intention—from ‘āina to oven to you.
“We believe granola can carry the spirit of the land it comes from.”
From her kitchen to your table—mahalo for being part of our story.
